Located in Kensington, Der Pioneer is the destination for fine European pastries from acclaimed Chefs Björn Böttcher and Greg Barbiero.
Björn and Greg met in 2010 at Ciano, a high-end Italian restaurant, where they both were members of the opening team. Regardless of their opposing standings, Björn, a seasoned veteran and Greg, back then rather a kitchen newbie, the two immediately clicked. Over after-shift beers, the two friends would often fantasize about opening their own place together but neither one of them was ready back then.
Fast forward six years and a few more beers, and the time is finally right. After parting professionally from Ciano, Greg kept cutting his teeth at places like Italian Kitchen, Saul and Maialino, becoming a well-rounded, experienced pro himself. Meanwhile, Björn headed the pastry department at The Lambs Club, growing his expertise even further. Over this whole period of time though, the two friends kept talking, planning and growing their dream until one day in June, 2016, it became reality. They signed the lease for what would eventually become “Der Pioneer”.
